Taya Currie becomes first woman drafted into OHL

Taya Currie became the first woman drafted in the Ontario Hockey League on Saturday when the Sarnia Sting selected her with the 267th pick.

Currie is a 15-year-old goaltender who completed her minor hockey career with the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs, a program that boasts Travis Konecny and Bo Horvat among its recent alumni.

"Taya Currie is a very athletic goaltender," OHL director of central scouting Darrell Woodley said. "Not the biggest goalie in the world at 5-foot-7, 145 pounds but I tell you, she makes up for it in her athleticism and her quickness. She does a great job of taking away the bottom of the net with her butterfly style."

Currie received some well-earned props from the hockey world, with Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Foligno offering his congratulations.

Canadian women's national team standout goaltender Shannon Szabados also congratulated Currie on the accomplishment.

"I would describe my game as athletic, flexible and quick," Currie said. "I'm a very competitive person and coachable. I take what I learn in practices into my game. I want to be known as the goalie that everyone hates to play against but loves to have on the team."

Currie is on track to become the third woman to play in the Canadian Hockey League — Szabados dressed for the WHL's Tri-City Americans in 2003-04, while Manon Rheaume played one game for the QMJHL's Trois-Rivieres Draveurs in 1991-92.

Congratulations, Taya! We'll be following your major junior career with avid interest with the OHL season provisionally set to resume this fall.
