Thibault Frossard’s goal and Ludovic Waeber’s save in the final round of the shootout between two second-tier Swiss teams helped give HC Ajoie a 3-2 win over HC La Chaux-de-Fonds.

But this wasn’t just your regular old shootout. This one lasted a while — and by a while I mean 23 (!) rounds.

That’s right, Anthony Huguenin was the 46th shooter, with Waeber denying his opportunity to end the game. Here’s the entire 19-minute marathon, which begins with a successful Kent Nilsson/Peter Forsberg move by Devin Muller of HC La Chaux-de-Fonds.

The teams did not have to go through their entire lineup if they wanted to re-use players. Muller and Huguenin were among several players who would go four times.

According to the IIHF, the shootout broke the previous Swiss record of 14 rounds and is believed to be a world record for a men’s hockey game. Just a few weeks ago Riga and Lokomotiv went 18 rounds in the KHL. A German league game in 2010 lasted 21 rounds. Then, of course, there was the 2014 marathon between the Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals that needed an NHL-record 20 rounds.

But if you really want to take things up a notch, you have to go to women’s hockey where the two longest shootouts in history reside. This past January saw a 27 rounder in Germany, while over in Sweden AIK Stockholm and Brynas Gavle put together one that went to the 56th (!) shooter.

That 15-round Rangers-Capitals shootout where Marek Malik’s legend was born doesn’t seem so long now, does it?
