The man said the swan lifted up its wings and beat down the dog with one wing then the other.

He said: “That stunned the poor thing. Three or four more slaps and she was gone”.

Dublin City Council park ranger Peter Duignan said: “I have never heard of anything like this happening before”.

Since the tragic attack, the council has set plans to erect signs to alert people of the dangers of dogs entering the pond at the park.

The dog's body was reportedly removed from the pond using a paddle boat and net.

Niall Hatch of Birdwatch Ireland said to TheJournal.ie: “I have come across the reverse, so it’s not surprising that the swan would see the dog a threat.

“What happened, in this case, was one of the parents would have seen the dog swimming in the water – an unusual occurrence. He would have seen this as a direct threat to his chicks.

“Obviously, the cygnets can’t fly and it’s just a natural instinct that kicks in.”
