Suspended RB Kareem Hunt cleared to practice with Browns

When media were permitted to watch Cleveland Browns practice on Monday morning, there was a surprise participant: Kareem Hunt.

The suspended running back has been given permission to return to practice.

Practice yes, games no

Hunt received an eight-game suspension from the NFL earlier this year for violations of the league’s personal conduct policy; there was video of him swinging at and kicking a woman last year in the hallway of the Cleveland hotel where he was living at the time, and there was a separate incident where Hunt allegedly punched a man at an Ohio resort.

In an email to the Akron Beacon-Journal, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy explained the conditions for Hunt’s return.

“We have been monitoring [Hunt’s] progress during the suspension. He is permitted to return to team activities, including practice. He is not permitted to play in or attend games until after the team’s eighth game. The time with the team enables him to re-acclimate himself and engage in conditioning work and practices,” McCarthy wrote.

Cleveland is coming off its bye week, so Hunt won’t be able to play again until Week 10, when the Browns host the Buffalo Bills.

Recovering from surgery

Hunt has spent much of his suspension rehabbing, after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia in late August.

As part of his suspension, Hunt was also to undergo counseling for anger management and other related issues.

A third-round draft pick in 2016, Hunt was a Pro Bowler with the Kansas City Chiefs before his release last season; the team indicated that Hunt had lied to Chiefs’ personnel about what happened in the Cleveland hotel incident.
