Inauguration poet Amanda Gorman will recite original piece at Super Bowl LV

Another young talent will take center stage at Super Bowl LV before Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes takes the field.

Amanda Gorman, the 22-year-old poet and breakout star at President Joe Biden’s inauguration, will recite an original poem before the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, the NFL announced Wednesday. The poem will be part of the in-stadium pregame ceremony and the TV broadcast.

Poet goes from inauguration to Super Bowl

Gorman was the youngest inaugural poet in history when she presented “The Hill We Climb” at the inauguration festivities on Jan. 20. She wrote the poem the night of Jan. 6, when supporters of Donald Trump broke into Congress.

The poem drew rave reviews from around the nation and viewers celebrated the moving delivery of poignant words. The Los Angeles native was named the city’s Youth Poet Laureate at the age of 16 and earned the national recognition three years later while studying sociology at Harvard. She is the youngest person to be awarded the honor.

The poem for the Super Bowl will be about the three community heroes the NFL has selected as honorary captains for the game. They are:

  • Trimaine Davis, a Los Angeles teacher who was able to get students internet access and laptops so they could do remote learning during the pandemic.

  • Suzie Dorner, a Tampa-based nurse who is managing the COVID-19 ICU at Tampa General Hospital.

  • James Martin, a Marine veteran who has helped other veterans and their families remain virtually connected during the pandemic through work with the Wounded Warrior Project.

The NFL is allowing about 22,000 fans in the stands at this year’s game between the Chiefs and hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers. About 7,500 free tickets are being given to healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines of the pandemic for the last 10 months.

The Weeknd will headline the halftime show in a performance produced by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church will sing the national anthem, and Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R. will sing “America the Beautiful.” Warren “Wawa” Snipe, a deaf rapper and recording artist, will perform both songs.
