Strikeforce Makes Heavyweight Grand Prix Final Official; Adds Additional Bouts

Strikeforce on Monday finally made official the conclusion of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. It will take place May 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

MMAWeekly.com has already reported the main event showdown between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier, the co-main event with Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez defending his title against Josh Thomson, and a light heavyweight feature bout pitting former champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs. Mike Kyle.

In making the official announcement, Strikeforce officials added another bout, matching up Bobby Voelker with Nah-Shon Burrell.

“Strikeforce is coming back to where it all started – San Jose,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. “The Bay Area has some of the best fight fans in the world and we can’t wait to get back with an event like this on May 19. With the Heavyweight Grand Prix final between Josh Barnett and Daniel Cormier, along with Gilbert Melendez’s lightweight title defense against longtime rival Josh Thomson, you don’t want to miss this card!”

The Strikeforce May 19 event is also expected to host a light heavyweight bout between Gian Villante and Derrick Mehmen.
