Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier to coach TUF, will fight for heavyweight title on July 7 in Las Vegas

The UFC has put together a mega-match for its heavyweight title, announcing Friday that champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will meet for the belt at UFC 226 on July 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The duo, who each successfully defended their titles last week at UFC 220 in Boston, will coach against each other on “The Ultimate Fighter,” before headlining the seventh annual International Fight Week card.

Miocic dominated power-punching Francis Ngannou and won a five-round unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 220, besting Ngannou by a score of 50-44 on all three judges’ cards.

Cormier finished knockout artist Volkan Oezdemir to retain the light heavyweight belt.

The bout will pit two of the most successful fighters in the sport’s history. Miocic already holds the UFC record for most consecutive successful title defenses, with three, having bested Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Ngannou after winning the title by stopping Fabricio Werdum.

He’s regarded as the best heavyweight in UFC history.

But in Cormier, he fights one of the sport’s all-time greats, as well as a man who has already had success at heavyweight.

Cormier previously won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, as well as two other minor heavyweight titles, and opened his career 13-0 as a heavyweight. He has UFC wins over Frank Mir and Roy Nelson at heavyweight and won the Strikeforce grand prix with a dominating performance over Josh Barnett.

The bout gives the UFC a potentially top-selling match to headline what has become one of its most important shows of the year.

Season 27 of “The Ultimate Fighter” will begin April 18 on Fox Sports 1 and will feature lightweights and featherweights.
