Yahoo Sports Stephanie Frappart to become first woman to referee a men's Champions League match
Stephanie Frappart will become the first female official to referee a men’s UEFA Champions League match when Italian titan Juventus hosts Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday.
Frappart, a 36-year-old French national, has long been considered among the top referees in the woman’s game, and officiated last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands in her come country.
A little more than a month later, she became the first woman to referee a top-level men’s international match by overseeing the UEFA Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea. Frappart previously had reffed men’s games in Ligue 1, France’s top-flight domestic circuit.
In October, Frappart marshaled a Europa League contest between England’s Leicester City and Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk. Now she’ll get the chance to work a game in the world’s most prestigious club competition — one that could feature Juve star Cristiano Ronaldo, the leading scorer in Champions League history. The 35-year-old Portuguese forward was rested by manager Andrea Pirlo for last weekend’s Serie A tie with Benevento.
Juventus trails Group G leading Barcelona by three points, with two matches, including a high-profile trip to Lionel Messi’s Barca Dec. 8, remaining in the group stage.
