St. Stephen continues to rally for Scottie Greene

Members of St. Stephen's hockey community continue to rally around an amateur hockey player injured in a car crash two weeks ago.

Scottie Greene and two other members of the St. Stephen Aces junior A hockey team were injured in a car crash on Sept. 14. Greene was left in critical condition after the car he was in left the road, hit a utility pole, and rolled. After undergoing surgery to relieve swelling to his brain, Greene has been kept in an induced coma.

His former coach and family friend Rob Canning said very little has changed with Greene's condition since his surgery. But Canning said everyone is remaining positive the young player will improve.

"Just hoping and praying," he said.

Since the accident, support has grown for Greene, including a GoFundMe page set up to help the 18 year old and his family. In St. Stephen where Greene, originally from Bishop's Falls, NL, has been playing this season, the hockey community continues to rally for him.

On Saturday, Jeff Dionne spent his morning at a table in the Garcelon Civic Centre flagging down young hockey players as they left practice.

"Have you signed the jersey for Scottie Greene yet?," he asked each player lugging their gear by.

Dionne is with the St. Stephen Minor Hockey Association, which he said is trying to get all of its players to sign Greene's No.18 Aces jersey.

Showing support for the player is a big deal he said, and so far the young players are being receptive.

"They know the Aces players really well," said Dionne, whose children know Greene.

"He's played road hockey with my kid out in the yard a number of times and we're just happy to be able to show some support."

More than 180 kids play hockey in the association and Dionne said he's positive all of them will have signed the jersey.

"We're well over a hundred signatures now," he said. "By the end of the weekend we hope to get most of them."
