FORT WORTH, Texas — Carl Edwards needs a win to advance to the final round of the Chase.

Well, Edwards can get into the final round if he doesn’t get a win. But he’s going to need some wild things to happen at Texas and Phoenix over the next two weeks. Edwards was the only Chaser who finished below 22nd at Martinsville and is already 32 points outside fourth in the Chase standings.

So yeah, that win thing seems important. And Edwards is confident about his chances for one over the next two weeks. He finished second at Phoenix and seventh at Texas in the spring.

“As soon as we had the tire trouble at Martinsville the first thing I thought of was how fortunate we are to be going to Phoenix and Texas,” Edwards said. “I feel like we had an opportunity to win both of those races and we had speed at both of the tracks and obviously we could’ve won both of them if things had gone a little differently”

Edwards led 124 laps at Texas after starting on the pole and was the only other driver than Kevin Harvick to lead in the second half of the race at Phoenix. Oh, and he barely lost to Harvick after running him down over the final two laps of the race.

Knowing he likely needs a win to move on also makes it “very simple.” And while Edwards has shown speed, he hasn’t won since Richmond in April.

“There’s only one direction to go and that’s forward and like you said, win, so that’s what we’ve got to do,” Edwards said. “And, really it’s time to get to it. If we want to win the championship we have to win Homestead anyway so it’s good to get in this mode. If we can get it done the next two races it’s only going to help us at Homestead so I think in that respect it’s good.”
