Sources: Sun Belt showcase game postponed due to COVID-19

The Sun Belt showcase game on Wednesday night between Appalachian State and Louisiana will be postponed, sources told Yahoo Sports. The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 7 in Boone, North Carolina.

The reason for the postponement is positive tests and contact tracing at Appalachian State, according to sources. This marks the 24th FBS game that’s been postponed or canceled because of COVID-19.

The game is expected to be rescheduled to Dec. 4-5, according to a source.

The postponement marks a missed opportunity for the Sun Belt conference, as the league’s marquee teams were slated to square off on ESPN. It’s unknown if similar exposure for the league will be available when it’s rescheduled.

Appalachian State has beaten Louisiana in the past two Sun Belt championship games. Louisiana (3-0) has spent part of this season ranked after winning at Iowa State in its opener. Appalachian State is 2-1 and still considered by many to be the Sun Belt favorite.

This marks the second Sun Belt game postponed this week, as Troy’s game with South Alabama was also postponed.
