Sources: Suns clear cap room for LaMarcus Aldridge pursuit by trading three players

As the Phoenix Suns pursue free-agent forward LaMarcus Aldridge, the team unloaded three players to the Detroit Pistons to clear an additional $7 million-plus in salary-cap space, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Suns traded forwards Marcus Morris and Danny Granger and guard Reggie Bullock to the Detroit Pistons for a 2020 second-round pick, league sources told Yahoo.

The Suns had $12 million in cap space entering free agency. Dealing Morris, Granger and Bullock now gives them nearly $20 million available, more than half of which is earmarked for the four-year, $52 million contract agreed to by center Tyson Chandler on Wednesday.

The Suns could work a sign-and-trade with the Dallas Mavericks potentially involving Markieff Morris to help get them the space needed to sign both Aldridge and Chandler. The Suns would need to unload the contract of Morris and possibly P.J. Tucker to create the space needed to sign Aldridge.

The Suns have no assurance Aldridge will sign, but the fact he's suddenly so intrigued has motivated them to push hard.

Aldridge is considering the possibility of taking a visit or two in free agency, sources told Yahoo. No decision is imminent.

The Suns aren't discussing any deals for guard Eric Bledsoe, because he's a part of the appeal for Aldridge. Aldridge wanted Bledose in Wednesday's meeting, because he wanted a chance to meet and get to know him.

The Suns surprised Aldridge by bringing Chander into the meeting and informing him they had agreed on a deal with Chandler. If Aldridge wanted to stay, Portland had considered signing Chandler as part of the free agent's preferred supporting cast, sources said.
