Perhaps the Portland Trail Blazers could’ve been an ideal scenario for Ray Allen to return to the NBA: A championship contender in a tradition-rich market losing one of the league’s best three-point shooters to a devastating injury.

In the wake of Wesley Matthews tearing his Achilles tendon on Thursday night, Blazers general manager Neil Olshey made a call to agent Jim Tanner on Friday morning on the chance that Allen might reconsider his decision to sit out the 2014-15 season, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Nevertheless, Tanner informed the Blazers that Allen, 39, remains intent on sitting out the season and wouldn’t consider the possibility of joining Portland – or any other team, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Allen is the most prolific three-point shooter in league history, but it’s possible that he’ll never play again.

For now, Portland appears far less inclined to pursue the rest of the barren free-agent guard market than it is simply to rely on Arron Afflalo, C.J. McColllum, Allen Crabbe, Alonzo Gee and Dorrel Wright to shoulder the shooting void left by Matthews.

The Blazers are 41-19, third in the Western Conference, and riding a five-game winning streak.
