Sources: Nuggets fire coach Brian Shaw

The Denver Nuggets fired coach Brian Shaw on Tuesday morning, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Nuggets have free-fallen to a 20-39 record in Shaw's second season as coach and have been rife with locker-room issues.

Assistant coach Melvin Hunt will become interim head coach for the remainder of the season and then the team will search for a full-time replacement, league sources told Yahoo.

Nuggets president Josh Kroenke told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday afternoon that he'll work with general manager Tim Connelly over the next few weeks on formulating a plan for the coaching search.

The Nuggets play the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night. Denver has lost 19 of its past 21 games, including a franchise-record 10 straight at home.

Shaw's firing comes after the Nuggets broke huddle late in Friday's 104-82 loss to the Utah Jazz by chanting, "1-2-3 … six weeks!" The Denver Post reported the chant was in reference to six weeks remaining in the season. On Monday, Shaw denied that was the players' intent and said they were referencing the team's home losing streak.

Shaw is the third NBA coach to be fired this season. The Sacramento Kings dismissed Michael Malone in December and the Orlando Magic fired Jacque Vaughn last month.
