Source: Kansas offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey expected to be next coach at Troy

Kansas offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey is expected to be the next coach at Troy, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Lindsey spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Auburn before joining Les Miles’ staff in January.

Lindsey has deep ties to the state of Alabama, where he’s spent nearly a decade as both an assistant coach and a high school head coach.

Lindsey also served as the quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010. The Trojans went 8-5 that season under Larry Blakeney and won the New Orleans bowl. Following that stint at Troy, Lindsey coached at Spain Park (Alabama) High School.

From there, Lindsey rose quickly up the collegiate ranks and developed a reputation for high-flying offenses, as he’s coordinated at Southern Miss, Arizona State and Auburn. He’s replacing Neal Brown at Troy, and will likely keep up the school’s history of wide-open offenses. (Brown took the West Virginia job after three consecutive 10-win seasons at Troy.)

In 2015 at Southern Miss, Lindsey’s offense broke five school records, including for touchdowns (67), points (528) and total offense (6,758). He coached 49ers breakout quarterback Nick Mullens at Southern Miss, helping him develop into a quarterback who acquitted himself well in the NFL this season.

Lindsey’s Arizona State offense in 2016 averaged 33.3 points per game and Auburn’s 2017 team featured a rejuvenated offense with Jarrett Stidham a first-team All-SEC quarterback and Kerryon Johnson winning SEC offensive player of the year.

Lindsey’s roots have remained strong in the state, as he was also the head coach at Colbert Heights and between 1997 and 2004 served as an assistant coach in Florence, Deshler, Sparkman, and Springville High Schools in Alabama.

Lindsey played football at North Alabama before transferring to Alabama, where he graduated in 1997.
