Soldier from Key West killed in military vehicle crash in Texas

A decorated U.S. Army soldier from Key West was killed in a military vehicle crash in Texas last week, according to reports by the Army Times and Stars and Stripes .

Sgt. Roger Matamoros Chavarria, 27, a graduate of Key West High School, died during a training event Aug. 28 at Fort Bliss near El Paso, the Army said in a news release.

“The details surrounding the mishap are under investigation at this time,” according to the Army’s statement.

Matamoros Chavarria was a motor transport operator assigned to the 123rd Support Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

The Army did not provide details about the incident.

“The Iron Support Battalion is incredibly saddened by the tragic loss of Sgt. Matamoros Chavarria and we grieve with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Lt. Col. Gilberto Escobedo, the battalion commander, said in a statement.

Matamoros Chavarria joined the Army while in Key West in November 2012 and had been stationed at Fort Bliss since January 2019, the Army Times said.

According to the Stars and Stripes, his awards include an Army Commendation Medal, three Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, a Afghanistan Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, a Korea Defense Service Medal, a Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, an Army Service Ribbon, an Overseas Service Ribbon, four Certificates of Achievement, a Combat Action Badge and an Air Assault Badge.
