While you were sleeping: USA won the halfpipe (again), Netherlands won speed skating gold (again)

Yahoo Sports

While most of the United States was fast asleep, the Winter Olympics were in full swing on the other side of the world in PyeongChang, South Korea. Luckily we stayed awake to monitor the fun. Here are the most important things that you missed while you were sleeping.

Results Highlights:

SNOWBOARDING: Team USA’s Shaun White didn’t dominate like 17 year-old Chloe Kim did yesterday, but he came away with a gold medal nonetheless. He trailed Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, who threw down back-to-back 1440s, heading into the third run. The American answered with back-to-back 1440s of his own to score a 97.75 and win his third Olympic gold medal. Hirano finished with another silver medal – he finished second in Sochi four years ago – and Australia’s Scott James edged American Ben Ferguson to win the bronze.

SPEED SKATING: The U.S. hasn’t won a women’s speed skating medal since 2002, but with two women in the finals of the 1,000-meter race they had a shot of ending that drought. They’ll have to wait a little bit longer though. Brittany Bowe faded down the stretch of her race to finish in fourth and teammate Jerica Tandiman finished in 28th. The Netherlands continued their speed skating dominance with another gold medal. Jorien ter Mors set an Olympic record en route to the gold while Japan’s Nao Kodaira and Miho Takagai took silver and bronze respectively.
