Nationals appear slap-happy thanks to interesting new celebration

After a rough road trip that included seven straight losses, the Washington Nationals are back on track with five straight wins, which included a three-game sweep of the New York Mets earlier this week. That put the Nationals in a dominant position atop the National League East. They’ll enter play on Friday night with a 48-32 record and a six-game lead over those same Mets.

Needless to say, they have more than enough good reason to be feeling happy. But it seems the Nationals are feeling a little more than just happy. They’re slap-happy, which was evidenced by this unique celebration during Thursday’s 13-4 drubbing of the Reds.

A Werthquake is what Nationals fans call a home run hit by Jayson Werth. Apparently a Werthslap is how he likes to share a celebratory moment with his teammates. Or least that’s how Werth and Danny Espinosa have been celebrating in recent weeks.

Here, the celebration followed Espinosa’s grand slam, which blew Thursdays’s game wide open.

It’s actually more of a Three Stooges slap than a real slap, but it’s still one of those things that will get your attention. It also indicates the Nationals are on the same page and feeling good this season after last season’s turmoil between Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon actually turned physical in the dugout.

Winning will do that for a team, and the Nationals are no doubt hoping there are many more slaps to be shared.
