Sidney Crosby fan turns front lawn into a floral 87

You know you're a diehard Sidney Crosby fan when you have 150 yellow flowers in your front lawn in the shape of 87, the number worn by the Cole Harbour NHL superstar.

Westphal resident Jeannie Conrod, 73, put the fake flowers into the ground last week after some handy lawn-mowing work by her grandson, Brett Boudreau.

The 14-year-old hockey player from Lake Echo is a huge Crosby fan and mowed the 87, but it was his grandmother who took it to the next level.

"I'm a diehard Crosby fan and I said I've got to do something with this," said Conrod, adding that she was thrilled when she saw the huge numbers cut into her grass.

She went to a nearby store and bought $50 worth of fake flowers, 150 of them in total, and stuck them in her lawn.

A good player, a better person

Sipping from a Pittsburgh Penguins coffee cup, Conrod said she instantly became a Crosby fan when he arrived to the NHL in 2005. The route for Crosby's two Stanley Cup parades through Cole Harbour is a short drive from her home.

The Penguins had a convincing 6-0 win over Nashville on Thursday night to take a 3-2 lead in this year's Stanley Cup final. They're now just one game away from winning another NHL title, and Conrod is hoping to see her favorite hockey player bring the Stanley Cup to Cole Harbour yet again.

"He's such a good player, but it's more than that; he's just so good to everybody," said Conrod. "He's been great to the people of Cole Harbour."

Conrod said she was feeling a little stressed earlier this week after Nashville easily won games 3 and 4 to tie the series. Then her cable was on the fritz and she was worried she wouldn't be able to watch Game 5. A neighbour "did something" to her TV to give her a temporary fix, she said.

Conrod is hoping Crosby and his Pittsburgh team mates can wrap up the series when it resumes Sunday night. She said she'll leave her giant yellow 87 alone for at least a few weeks.
