Shocker in New York: Giants upset Chiefs 12-9

The New York Giants’ season of misery is on hold for at least one week.

A stunning 12-9 overtime victory against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Metlife Stadium gave New York its first home win of the season in dramatic fashion.

Rookie kicker Aldrick Rosas nailed the winning field goal after a circus catch by wide receiver Roger Lewis put the Giants at the goal line on a huge fourth-down gamble.

Even while getting interfered with and dragged down, Lewis still maintained focus on the ball and delivered a 34-yard sliding catch:

It’s the type of play you expect from Odell Beckham Jr. or Sterling Shepard — both were out with injuries Sunday — not a sophomore wideout with only 21 career catches.

The catch led to Rosas getting a chance to kick the winning field goal.

New York forced a Chiefs punt on the opening drive in overtime, before barely getting back into field-goal range at the K.C. 36-yard line. That set up a third-and-5 drop by Evan Engram in the red zone, putting the Giants in an impossible spot — trust the rookie kicker with the longest field goal of his career, or go test a stingy Chiefs defense that had stumped the offense all game. New York chose the latter and Lewis rewarded it.

Still, New York made this as nauseating a win as it could for its fans.

After picking off a poorly thrown ball by Alex Smith and running it back to the Chiefs 23-yard line, New York managed to pick up just one first down before settling for a field goal with 1:41 left in regulation.

That should’ve been game, but the Giants refuse to make things easy on themselves. During the following drive, they had a second consecutive interception on Smith called back for pass interference and allowed a 32-yard strike to tight end Travis Kelce on the very next pass. Seven plays and 37 yards later, K.C. kicked the game-tying field goal with only five seconds left on the clock.

Overtime wasn’t any more settling. The Chiefs received the ball first just as it looked like their offense was ready to start rolling. Instead they managed only 16 yards before punting back to New York.

Eli Manning posted his second-worst QB rating of the season (71.1) going 19-for-35 passing with 205 yards. The run game didn’t help him much either as the Giants picked up just 112 yards on 32 rushes.

What kept New York alive on Sunday was a lethargic Kansas City offense that couldn’t seem to get out of its own way. Smith completed just 27 of 40 pass attempts for 230 yards and two interceptions. Then, Kelce got picked off on a trick play late in the fourth quarter.

The Giants will gladly take it.
