Sharks give GM Doug Wilson vote of confidence

A disappointing season in the NHL won’t always mean a complete overhaul.

The San Jose Sharks are sixth in the Pacific Division with a 21-25-4 record, but majority owner Hasso Plattner will not waver in his support of long-time general manager Doug Wilson.

"While we are all very disappointed in the team's performance thus far this season, Doug has a long history of leading our team to success," Plattner told NHL.com.

"The last time we failed to meet our winning standards in the 2014-15 season, we were able to quickly rebound and re-establish a winning culture for the next several years. I am supportive of Doug's plan to get our team back on track."

Filled to the brim with experienced veterans, the Sharks were poised to make their fifth consecutive postseason appearance, and 16th under the guidance of Wilson. Unfortunately, their underperformance has left them sinking to the bottom of their mediocre division.

Their recent success — reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2016 and the Western Conference final just last spring — has certainly carried Wilson’s reputation in San Jose, but it wasn’t enough for head coach Peter DeBoer to keep his position.

After suffering a five-game losing streak in December, the Sharks decided to axe their head coach of four years and replace him with assistant Bob Boughner. DeBoer quickly moved on and became the Vegas Golden Knights’ head coach after San Jose’s division rival fired Gerard Gallant in a shocking move last week.

With All-Star Weekend approaching, the Sharks will have an interesting second half to their season with their long-time GM still in control.

San Jose returns to action on Monday against the Anaheim Ducks in search for their 22nd win of the season.
