Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan did not seem pleased with his team’s trade of center Martin Hanzal to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday.

During an interview on Fox Sports Arizona between periods at the Coyotes’ Sunday home game against the Buffalo Sabres, the franchise’s all-time leading scorer showed some raw emotion in regards to Arizona’s decision to deal Hanzal, who had been a teammate of Doan’s since the 2007-08 season.

Arizona also sent forward Ryan White and a 2017 fourth-round draft pick to the Wild in exchange for a 2017 first-round pick, a 2018 second-round pick and a 2019 conditional fourth-round pick. The Coyotes also acquired forward Grayson Downing. The 30-year-old Hanzal was a pending unrestricted free agent in the offseason and had 16 goals and 26 points in 51 games played with the Coyotes while winning 56.02 percent of his faceoffs.

“Well, it’s really hard. Obviously he’s a huge part of our team and someone that you get to play with for 10 years and you appreciate and you understand how valuable and how … um you can’t really replace him and the fact that we just continue to uh … seem to go … I don’t know. It’s hard to understand exactly, I mean you understand people’s hands are tied and you just don’t get it,” Doan said.

The 40-year-old Doan is currently on a one-year contract worth $3,876,134 and there has been speculation that he may want a shot at the Stanley Cup if this is indeed his final season. In January, it was reported that Doan would consider a trade from the Coyotes. Doan, who has played his entire career with the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise has five goals and 15 assists on the season.

The Coyotes currently have the second-worst record in the Western Conference and will likely miss the postseason for the fifth-straight season.
