Marcao’s time at Sevilla has been nothing short of hellish. The Brazilian centre-back, signed for €14m from Galatasaray in 2022, has majorly struggled with injuries since making the move to Andalusia, which has meant that he has only played 21 times over the previous two seasons.

Because of injuries, Marcao was unable to start either of Sevilla’s last two pre-season campaigns in 2022 and 2023, although he is hopeful of being available for the beginning of Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta’s tenure. He played 45 minutes in the final match of last season against Barcelona, and came through that appearance unfazed.

However, Sevilla do not view the situation as optimistically. As reported by Diario AS, club officials are considering whether to terminate Marcao’s contract over the coming weeks, due to their belief that he is unable to stay fit for a sustained period of time.

The problem for Sevilla is that Marcao’s contract runs until 2027, so they would have to pay out a significant amount for the final three years of his deal. Given their financial woes, they can now particularly afford to do it.
