7 of the craziest moments from the Bills-Colts snow game

The Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts played in some wintry conditions on Sunday, as a thick blanket of snow covered the playing surface at New Era Field throughout the afternoon.

One longtime Bills reporter said just before kickoff he couldn’t remember such a heavy snowstorm on gameday, and there was one report late in the game that there was “thundersnow” in the area of the stadium.

Look, we’re all for supporting your team, but holy crap. (Just a head’s up, there’s a curse word at the end of the video.)

The Bills wound up winning, 13-7, in overtime, keeping their hopes of a wild-card playoff spot alive, and it was so dark by the end that even though the game began just after 1 p.m. ET, the lights were on at New Era.

LeSean McCoy’s game-winning touchdown with under 2 minutes left in OT – which goes down as an 18-yarder, though we’re not sure how anyone can know definitively – might have been the biggest moment of the game, but perhaps not the craziest.

Which of course set off the obligatory snow-throwing celebration:

Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri had a failure:

And a success, which makes sense since he’s the greatest snow kicker the NFL has ever seen:

Vinatieri needed his teammates’ help before he could get that extra point, which was 43 yards, not 33, because of a penalty on the Colts’ nullified two-point conversion:

The sidelines, goal lines and end lines were kept as clear as possible, but still, this wasn’t an easy catch for Kelvin Benjamin. The Bills’ social media team even made a new category for Benjamin’s move: Snow Drag Swag, a play on Toe Drag Swag:

The Colts ran the ball on 20 of their first 21 plays, not attempting a pass in the first quarter, the first team this season to go the first 15 minutes of a game without an attempt.

As you’d suspect, the Bills and Colts ended up running the ball a lot. How much? A combined 97 times, the most carries in a game since the Chiefs and Bears combined for 100 in a game in 1981.

(Vinatieri, in his 22nd season, wasn’t in the NFL then, but he was the only player on either side who can say he was alive that day.)
