Senators reportedly reach agreement with Alex Galchenyuk

Alex Galchenyuk will look to revive his career with the Ottawa Senators.

On Wednesday, the Senators reportedly reached an agreement with the wandering former third-overall selection on a one-year deal, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports the deal will be worth a shade over $1 million.

Galchenyuk’s stock has dropped significantly since signing a three-year bridge contract with the Montreal Canadiens in 2017. He piled up 51 points in the first season on that agreement — and his sixth in Montreal — but wound up with the Arizona Coyotes as the return asset in the Max Domi trade that following summer.

After providing diminishing returns in his one season in the desert, scoring only 41 points, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins to begin this past season. Galchenyuk lasted only 45 games in Pittsburgh before being moved along to the Minnesota Wild.

All told, he scored eight goals and 24 points in 59 games, and was not issued a contract offer from the Wild. What’s worse, he’s been a serious under-performer from a defensive standpoint as well.

That said, Galchenyuk is in a reasonably favourable spot to reclaim some value and productivity in Ottawa. He will have every opportunity to break into an under-construction top six that currently features only Brady Tkachuk and Evgeni Dadonov as mainstays, and could put up some decent numbers if he can lock down an important role for a team still taking its lumps.
