See grand opening of new Sacramento supermarket in a neighborhood ‘food desert’
The Rancho San Miguel Market held its grand opening in Sacramento’s Oak Park neighborhood Wednesday, bringing fresh food and affordable prices to a historically underserved neighborhood.
The store is located at 4401 Broadway, once the site of Food Source, which closed in March 2020. The area has been referred to as a “food desert,” because of a lack of affordable nearby supermarkets. A significant number of residents in the neighborhood live more than half a mile away from the nearest market, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Rancho San Miguel Market specializes in Hispanic products, including grab-and-go items and a salsa and ceviche bar.
“This is a wonderful step in getting more healthy food access to our community,” said customer Alberto Mercado. “We really need it and we appreciate that it’s been opened. We’ve been waiting for three years almost.”
