Saint John teen looks to climb the ranks of pro video gamers

A Saint John teen and his eSports teammates have landed a spot on a semi-pro video gaming team after a recent tournament victory in Moncton.

Professional video gaming, known as eSports, is continuing to grow, with the top events held in big arenas with giant cash prizes to match.

The Moncton tournament was comparatively small, but 17-year-old Anthony Levesque and his team turned some heads.

Levesque spends about three hours a day playing League of Legends, an online, team-based game with millions of players.

This year's winning team at the world championships for League of Legends took home $1 million.

"I'd like to be in the big tournaments where you actually get paid for playing," Levesque said.

He and his team took a small step after the tournament when the FrontSide eSports team recruited them. That will give them a higher profile among gamers.

Levesque's team now has its eyes set on another, bigger tournament in March.
