Ryan Strome, Islanders agree to 2-year, $5 million deal

Ryan Strome and the New York Islanders have come to terms on a two-year deal, the team announced Tuesday. Per Arthur Staple of Newsday, he’ll get $5 million over the term.

The 23-year-old Strome was an RFA this summer after a down year offensively where he scored eight times and recorded 28 points. He had a breakout sophomore year in 2014-15 with 17 goals and 50 points.

While Charles Wang is no longer the majority owner of the Islanders, one steadfast rule of his reign remains in place under Jon Ledecky and Scott Malkin: any restricted free agent who is unsigned at the start of training camp will not play at all the entire season.

Last year it was Brock Nelson who went to the deadline before agreeing to an extension.

Strome’s struggles last season – which also featured a three-week AHL stint — extended into the playoffs where Islanders head coach Jack Capuano made him a healthy scratch three times. The team is hoping last season was the wake-up call he needs to get his game back to where it was two years ago.

Said Strome to Staple this week: “For whatever reason — a bit of luck, a bit of me, a bit of everything, really — there’s certainly things I’d like to do better, things I need to do better, and I’m taking accountability for it.”
