Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf suffered an upper body injury and did not start the third period for his team in their game at the San Jose Sharks.

In the second period, Getzlaf took a puck off the forearm on a shot from Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Getzlaf winced in pain and then went to the locker room. He eventually returned in the second but clearly didn’t feel well enough to start the third period.

After the game, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said Getzlaf’s status would be reassessed Wednesday.

The Ducks lost the game 2-1 in overtime.

Here is the play:

At the start of the third, the Ducks listed Getzlaf as “questionable.”

Losing Getzlaf for any amount of time would be a blow to the Ducks as they try to gain traction in Randy Carlyle’s second stint as head coach. Getzlaf came into the game leading the team with eight points (one goal and seven assists in six games) while averaging 20:07 of ice-time. Last season, Getzlaf had just one point in his first six games and was a minus-5.

Anaheim is in the middle of a back-to-back and will play the Nashville Predators on Wednesday at Honda Center. Coming into this game the Ducks had won two straight after starting the year with four straight losses.
