Rutgers has lost three scholarship quarterbacks to transfer this week.

Yes, three. Juniors Hayden Rettig and Chris Laviano and redshirt freshman Mike Dare have all decided to leave the program over the past three days. Of the three, Laviano was the only one to take a snap for the Scarlet Knights this season as the program transitioned to new head coach Chris Ash.

Laviano and Rettig competed with Giovanni Rescigno for the starting role entering the season. Laviano was the team’s starter in 2015 and had started 18 straight games for the Scarlet Knights, but was benched in favor of Rescigno in October. True freshman Tylin Oden and TCU graduate transfer Zach Allen also saw playing time for Rutgers, which finished 2-10 overall and 0-9 in Big Ten play in Ash’s first season.

Ash’s offense suits a more mobile quarterback, so Laviano and Rettig, a former prized recruit who began his career at LSU, weren’t exactly fits. Neither was Dare, who did not play a snap during his two seasons with the program.

Laviano and Rettig are scheduled to graduate, so they’ll both be eligible to suit up immediately at their new schools. Per NJ.com, Rettig is on pace to graduate in December, while Laviano will earn his degree in May.

Overall during his time at Rutgers, Laviano threw for 3,102 yards, 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing 55.8 percent of his passes. Rettig played in four games in 2015, starting once, and threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

Dare was a three-star recruit in the 2015 class. He told NJ.com he hopes to land at another Power Five program, but would be open to playing anywhere.

Rescigno, Odin and Allen are all expected to return in 2017 for the Scarlet Knights. The program also has a commitment from three-star recruit Johnathan Allen, a dual-threat quarterback from St. Peter’s Prep in North Jersey.
