RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Baga, Blu and Vinegar on why makeup is a confidence booster: "Makeup is art"

Watch: How to tell your parents you want to wear makeup

Reality Check, the show that turns your favourite reality TV stars into agony aunts, is back and this time we have three gorgeous queens ready to dispense their advice.

On the first episode, Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea and Vinegar Strokes are asked if they have any advice to share about telling your parents that you want to wear makeup.

Never one to beat around the bush, Baga called unsupportive relatives “b*******” and went on to say that you should always be yourself.

“Live your authentic self!” exclaimed the self-confessed natural beauty.

“You put on your face, whatever you want. You can put Marmite on your face. If you want to experiment with makeup, if you're a boy or a girl - any gender - you do it. You put your makeup on, and it gives you confidence!”

It’s a question that’s very close to Blu’s heart, who revealed that despite being obsessed with RuPaul’s Drag Race as a teen, she originally had to hide her fascination with drag makeup from her family.

“I used to hide in my bathroom with a Sharpie pen and map out where I wanted my drag face to eventually be,” she admitted.

“I used to hide it from my mum and run about wiping it off like as fast as I could, whenever she needed to pee late in the night.”

Now as a look queen, Blu is celebrated for her amazing work with makeup. Her advice? Practise, get good at it and then you’ll be able to share your secret more easily.

“Once you find the happiness within yourself, then you're able to share it with other people,” Blu stated.

She continued: “Whenever I got good at something, whenever I was happy enough with it and proud of it, then I could share it with people because I knew that they wouldn't be at, they wouldn't think it was bad or embarrassing. They would think, 'Wow, this boy's got talent' and it's time for him to share it with the world.”

Vinegar Strokes, who got hammered for her makeup looks on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, said that keeping your love of makeup secret from your parents means you’re not showing them the real you.

“If you're keeping it all secret, you're keeping your love of makeup, of the performing arts, wherever it is you're keeping secret, you're denying your parents… the chance to get to know you and who you're turning into.”

Her advice? Be open and frank with your parents – and even if they don’t understand why you have your fascination, they should hopefully be accepting of it.

“I think it's just being honest and frank with your parents because that's what they want,” she said.

Vinegar also implores everyone to remember what makeup is really about – expression and art.

“Makeup is art,” she stated. “Whether you're just doing a basic winged liner or you're doing a full face, looking like some extravagant Blu Hydrangea masterpiece, either way, it's art.

“I think that we can get back to that and take out the gender, sexuality - all that stuff - then we're getting back to the nitty gritty of what makeup really is.”
