Rougned Odor's walk-off homer gives Rangers yet another comeback win

Welcome to The Walk Off, the nightly MLB recap from Big League Stew. Here we’ll look at the top performers of the night, show you a must-see highlight and rundown the scoreboard. First, we start with a game you need to know about.

Rougned Odor already showed us he could land a right cross this season, now we’ve seen him deliver a gut-punch too.

Odor hit a walk-off homer on Tuesday night against Seattle Mariners, a blast that gave the Rangers an 8-7 win and gave the Mariners their fourth straight loss, all but assuring their quest for the AL West crown is over. The Mariners now find themselves 10.5 games behind the first-place Rangers.

The M’s had come back twice in the game, taking an eight-inning lead on a Robinson Cano sac fly. But Odor’s two-run homer off Seattle closer Edwin Diaz sank the comeback permanently.

Odor literally walked this one off too, hitting the homer, dropping his bat and walking down the first-base line while admiring his work. He earned the pimp-job, though. He made up for a base-running blunder earlier in the game and, in the process, added another stripe to the Rangers’ season of comebacks.

It was their 40th comeback win of the year — 40! — and their winning percentage in one-run games is on pace to be an MLB record.

TOP PERFORMERS

Max Scherzer: Scherzer had one of those nights where his stuff looked so good you knew early he’d be flirting with a no-hitter. In this case, he took the no-no into the sixth inning. Once it was over, he and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2. Scherzer finished his night striking out 11 and allowing three hits in eight innings.

Kyle Hendricks: He might be one of the best pitchers in baseball this year that nobody’s talking about and Hendricks kept it going Tuesday night. He tossed seven shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. Hendricks improved to 13-7 and dropped his ERA to 2.09.

Matt Wieters: The third-place Orioles beat the first-place Blue Jays 5-3 and Wieters gets a lot of credit for it. His two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference in this one. Manny Machado also homered for the Orioles, the 100th of his career.

MUST-SEE PLAY

It didn’t decide a game, but we’ll be damned if Zack McAllister’s improbable catch isn’t the must-see play of Tuesday night’s baseball action. The Cleveland Indians pitcher kicked a line drive in the air, spun around, spotted the ball and caught it. And the Indians beat the Twins 5-4.

THE REST OF THE SCOREBOARD

Tigers 8, White Sox 4: Ian Kinsler has four hits for the Tigers and JaCoby Jones’ first MLB hit is a go-ahead double in the sixth inning.

Yankees 5, Royals 4: Aaron Hicks scores the game-winner for the Yankees in the 10th inning on a Jacoby Ellsbury infield single.

Rays 4, Red Sox 3: Evan Longoria’s eighth-inning homer is the difference-maker here, giving Tampa Bay the win after another strong start by Jake Odorizzi.

Astros 3, A’s 1: Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis each hit solo homers to lift the Astros, who are two back in the AL wild-card race.

D-backs 4, Giants 3: A four-run, fifth-inning and six strong innings from Zack Greinke are enough for the D-backs to beat the Giants.

Mets 7, Marlins 4: Curtis Granderson homers twice for the Mets after coming into the game as a pinch hitter.

Cardinals 2, Brewers 1: Randal Grichuk comes up big again for the Cards, this time hitting a walk-off single in the 10th inning. On Monday night, he hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the eighth inning of an eventual Cardinals win.

Angels 4, Reds 2: C.J. Cron hits two homers and knocks in three runs to beat the Reds.

Braves 7, Padres 3: Dansby Swanson has two hits and three RBIs for the Braves, who score five in the third inning and never look back.
