Romelu Lukaku: Manchester United striker must leave Old Trafford, says Roberto Martinez

Romelu Lukaku has been told that he should leave Manchester United this summer by his national team manager, Belgium’s Roberto Martinez.

In an interview with Belgian newspaper HLN, Lukaku’s national team manager threw his weight behind a departure from Old Trafford this summer, amid interest in the striker from Internazionale.

“It is clear that he has to leave Manchester United,” Martinez said. “It would be a good thing for both parties. It is now important that Romelu finds the right club.”

United are open to letting Lukaku leave after he lost his automatic starting place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but they will only allow him to leave for the right price.

Lukaku arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2017 from Everton for a fee of £75m and United hope to recoup the entirety of that fee, at the very least.

Inter lead the race to sign the Belgium international. Antonio Conte is a long-term admirer of Lukaku, having previously attempted to bring him to Chelsea, but Inter are yet to meet United's asking price.

Lukaku claimed to have made a decision on his future last week. “It’s good that Conte went to Inter, for me he is the best coach in the world,” he said, after scoring a brace in Belgium’s 3-0 win over Scotland.

“As for my future, I have already made a decision that I still cannot communicate publicly out of respect for Manchester United with whom I have a contract.”
