Roger That: Tom Brady takes swipe at NFL commissioner in local commercial

Tom Brady hasn’t done a ton of television commercials over his career; the official word was the New England Patriots star turned down a lot of opportunities to remain focused on his play.

But in recent years, Brady has done more. His partnership with Under Armour has led to some, and among others, there was his funny Foot Locker ad last fall.

Those commercials, however, are all national campaigns; in the fall, those of us that live in New England were surprised to see Brady in a local ad for Shields MRI, a group with imaging centers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In the spot, a Shields employee calls Brady for his appointment and walks him to a small locker to keep his valuables. Brady holds up his hand, flush with four Super Bowl rings, and takes off each one to place in the locker.

But right after the Patriots’ incredible comeback to win Super Bowl LI, Shields debuted a new version of the commercial:

In it, Brady pulls a fifth ring out of the pocket of his hoodie, announcing, “It’s kind of new.” When the employee responds, “We’re going to have to get you a bigger locker,” Brady quips, “Roger that.”

That last line can’t be seen as anything other than a subtle swipe at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who suspended Brady for four games for his supposed role in deflate-gate.

What’s most surprising is that Brady filmed the ad months ago, long before the Patriots had clinched a playoff berth, let alone a spot in the Super Bowl to give Brady the chance to win a record-setting fifth title. Brady, like many athletes, is usually superstitious, so getting him to say New England had won before it happened may have taken some doing.

If the Patriots hadn’t won, this version of the commercial obviously wouldn’t have seen the light of day. But since they did, #RogerThat is likely going to be a popular hashtag among Patriots fans for a little while.
