Rockies-Giants Preview

AP - Sports

The Colorado Rockies have seemingly rediscovered their mighty offense following a prolonged slump. That might be bad news for Ryan Vogelsong, who witnessed just how potent the Rockies could be earlier this year.

Colorado hopes to have Troy Tulowitzki as it looks for a season-best fourth straight victory Saturday against the San Francisco Giants.

The Rockies (32-35), who lead the majors in runs and batting average, were hitting .244 with a pedestrian 3.4 runs per game during a 7-20 stretch before managing 13 hits in Tuesday's 13-10 loss to Atlanta. They combined for 18 runs and 25 hits while winning the next two games against the Braves, then scored five runs in the ninth against Giants closer Sergio Romo for a 7-4 victory at AT&T Park on Friday.

"To win a game like that, not only the first game of the series but the way we won it, (is) big for our club," manager Walt Weiss said.

Weiss' club hadn't won three straight since May 5-7 and hasn't won four in a row since last August.

Justin Morneau has led the recent surge, going 8 for 16 over the last four games with eight RBIs. Colorado has hit .463 with runners in scoring position in that stretch, including 5 for 9 on Friday.

However, the Rockies, already without Michael Cuddyer, Carlos Gonzalez and Nolan Arenado, likely couldn't afford an extended absence by Tulowitzki. Baseball's leader with a .356 average and second in the NL with 17 homers, Tulowitzki singled to open the ninth but needed a pinch-runner as he exited with a right toe injury, according to the team's official website. X-rays were negative and his status for Saturday is unclear.

The three-time All-Star was limited to 173 games over the past two seasons.

Vogelsong (4-3, 3.84 ERA) was charged with six runs and nine hits - both season worsts - over six-plus innings in Monday's 9-2 loss to Washington. He had been 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his previous four outings.

"He's been throwing the ball so well, but the cutter stayed up on him," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website.

He was even worse in an 8-2 loss at Colorado on April 21 when he allowed five runs - all on three homers - in just 1 1-3 innings, the shortest of his 91 starts with the Giants. He's 1-2 with a 9.17 ERA in his last four starts against the Rockies.

Three of Wilin Rosario's four hits in 12 at-bats against Vogelsong have been home runs, including one in April.

While the Giants (43-25) are second in the NL with 69 homers behind Colorado's 84, they've failed to hit one in a season-worst seven consecutive games and have dropped four of five.

Buster Posey hasn't had an RBI in a season-high six straight games and has none versus Colorado this season while going 3 for 21.

Christian Bergman (0-1, 3.00) looks to keep San Francisco neutralized after an impressive big-league debut. He limited Atlanta to two runs and six hits over six innings in Monday's 3-1 loss.

The Giants hadn't faced a rookie starter prior to Thursday's 7-1 victory over Washington, when they tallied five hits and two runs during Blake Treinen's five innings.

Hunter Pence is batting .385 over his last 16 games against the Rockies with 17 RBIs.
