Yahoo Sports Rockets postpone Travis Scott Day after 8 people died during his Astroworld Festival
The Houston Rockets were supposed to hold Travis Scott Day during Wednesday's game against the Detroit Pistons, but postponed the event after eight people died during Scott's Astroworld Festival Friday, according to Marc Spears of The Undefeated.
Instead, the team will hold a moment of silence for the victims before the game. It's the Rockets' first home game since the Astroworld Festival. The team played on the road over the weekend.
Rockets president of business operations Gretchen Sheirr told the Houston Chronicle holding the event "would have been insensitive."
“After what was a horrific tragedy last week, we felt it would have been insensitive and not the right time for us to move forward,” Sheirr said. “Tonight, we’ll honor victims with a moment of silence to help our community heal.”
At least eight people died following Friday's concert. Attendees reportedly began surging toward the stage, injuring at least 17 people.
Scott received criticism for not stopping the concert. He released a statement the following day saying he was "absolutely devastated by what took place last night."
Sheirr said the Rockets have not made plans to reschedule Wednesday's event, per the Houston Chronicle.
The Rockets promoted Travis Scott Day on social media as recently as Thursday, but those posts were deleted following Friday's events.
