Revealed: The only player who scared Peter Crouch

Peter Crouch has admitted there was only one player who ever truly frightened him out of all his opponents.

Crouch, who has played for England 42 times, across the English divisions, in Sweden, and in the Champions League, has vast experience of different opponents.

At 37, he is still playing for Championship side Stoke City, who have employed their fair share of bruisers under Tony Pulis, Mark Hughes and Paul Lambert.

He now co-hosts a podcast, That Peter Crouch Podcast. In the latest edition he mentions that ‘keeper Heurelho Gomes actually had a tear in his eye after being subjected to a long-throw bombardment from Rory Delap.

But Crouch also mentioned that Kevin Muscat was the only player who scared him. Muscat played for Crystal Palace, Wolves and Millwall in England, and was successfully sued by Matty Holmes for £250,000, after Muscat’s tackle in 1998 injured his knee so seriously it required four operations.

Over the course of almost two decades, Muscat was booked 123 times, and was sent off on 12 occasions, and was known as one of the most aggressive players in professional football.

Crouch said: “Kevin Muscat scared me. You know people would say ‘I’m going to break your legs’ – when he would say it, you genuinely believed him.”
