Retired star J.J. Watt laughs off NFL staffer's request for random drug testing

NFL players never know when they will be subjected to a random drug test. But former Arizona Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt thought he had left all that behind when he announced his retirement at the end of the 2022 season.

Then on Tuesday, Watt received a text message from someone identified only as "Dillon on behalf of the NFL" who informed him he needed to set up an appointment for an "hgh dry blood spot test."

Watt shared the text -- and his snappy response -- on social media.

"I don't know what happens when you click 'Report Junk' but I think I'm about to find out ..." Watt tweeted.

The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year called it a career after 12 seasons as one of the league's most dominant pass rushers with the Cardinals and Houston Texans.

The mixup with the league is understandable, although other NFL players might not believe in the "randomness" of who gets selected for drug testing.

Last weekend, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf showed off his basketball skills at the NBA's Celebrity All-Star Game -- scoring 20 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and earning game MVP honors.

Three days later, Metcalf posted a screenshot to his Instagram story that appeared to show he needed to set up an appointment to be drug tested.

An NFL spokesperson said in an email to USA TODAY Sports on Monday that neither the league nor the union is aware of who is being tested and when.
