San Jose State has looked to the north for its new coach.

The school said Wednesday that Oregon State wide receivers coach Brent Brennan would be its next head coach. The Spartans fired coach Ron Caragher on the Sunday after the season ended. San Jose State finished the season 4-8.

“We want to recruit high-character young men that are tough and love to play football and also take their academics seriously,” Brennan said in a school statement. “We’re going to help them grow from young men into men and put a product on the field that anybody who has a connection with Spartan football can be proud of.”

Brennan stayed at Oregon State after Mike Riley was hired by Nebraska following the 2014 season. He’s been at Oregon State since 2011 and knows San Jose State very well. He was an assistant coach with the Spartans for six years before joining Oregon State’s staff. And, per the Oregonian, the California native is the Beavers’ primary recruiter in California.

That California familiarity will be a boon to San Jose State, which hasn’t recaptured the magic it had in 2012. The Spartans finished the season 11-2 under coach Mike MacIntyre — who left for Colorado — and won the Military Bowl under interim coach Kent Baer.

Caragher, hired as MacIntyre’s permanent replacement, was 19-30 in four seasons with the Spartans. The team went to the Cure Bowl as a 5-7 team in 2015 and ended 6-7 thanks to a win.
