Reports: Mississippi State DL Nick James arrested

Mississippi State defensive lineman Nick James was reportedly arrested early Sunday morning.

According to the Starkville Daily News, James was arrested for public intoxication at Rick’s Cafe, a bar near MSU’s campus in Starkville. The arrest occurred at 1:36 a.m., the Daily News is reporting, and James was subsequently released on bond.

Oktibbeha County deputy sheriff Chadd Garnett confirmed to The Clarion-Ledger that James was arrested by Starkville Police. Garnett offered no other details.

Per The Clarion-Ledger, the football program said it is aware of “an incident” involving James and head coach Dan Mullen is “gathering more information.”

James, a fifth-year senior, is expected to start at defensive tackle for the Bulldogs this season. He played in 13 games in 2015, including 10 starts, and totaled 26 tackles, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble. James also played in 13 games and had 11 tackles in 2014 and had six tackles in eight games as a true freshman in 2012. He redshirted the 2013 season.

This is the fourth arrest for James during his time at Mississippi State.

James’ arrest marks his fourth in the last three years at Mississippi State. The last occurred on Feb. 15, 2015 for public intoxication. The two other arrests involved driving with a suspended license and disorderly conduct in Oct. 2014 and driving without insurance in 2013.

Mississippi State opens its season next Saturday at home against South Alabama.
