Official: Kevin Wilson resigns from Indiana
Kevin Wilson’s tenure at Indiana is over.
Indiana made Wilson’s departure from the team official in a Thursday evening news conference. Indiana athletic director Fred Glass said he met with Wilson on Thursday morning to continue their discussions on a number of issues and the two agreed for Wilson to resign due to philosophical differences about how to run the football team.
The school has promoted defensive coordinator Tom Glass to be Wilson’s replacement and he will be the permanent head coach.
“Once coach Wilson and I concluded to part ways, I turned to determining who the best person in the country would be to keep up our momentum and take us to another level with our football team,” Glass said. “I quickly concluded that person was in our midst in Tom Allen. He is a leader of men. He is demanding without being demeaning. He is a proven, successful coach on a national scale with deep Indiana ties. He cares about his players, and they care back.”
Glass said there was no “smoking gun” or single event that “led to where we are today” regarding Wilson’s departure.
ESPN reports players met with school administrators in recent days about the way they were treated.
Officials haven’t yet announced a reason for Wilson’s dismissal, but a former Hoosiers player told ESPN that he and at least five current IU players were interviewed about Wilson’s treatment of players in meetings with athletics department officials and university lawyers during the past two weeks.
An ex-player’s father told ESPN that his son was rushed back to conditioning workouts after a concussion and his symptoms subsequently “went haywire.”
Glass said at the announcement he had no reports of erroneous medical care for players and termed the care “appropriate” and “robust.” He noted that the program had brought in “outside people” to help look at issues in the program. Indiana instituted an athlete bill of rights in 2014.
Indiana finished the 2016 season 6-6 and will be heading to a bowl game. The Hoosiers will find out the destination on Sunday.
Wilson, 55, has been Indiana’s coach since 2011. The Hoosiers’ overall record has improved incrementally since a 1-11 first season and the team lost in last season’s Pinstripe Bowl on a controversial kick in overtime that might or might not have gone through the uprights.

The Pinstripe Bowl appearance was Indiana’s first bowl with Wilson and the school’s first bowl appearance since the 2007 Insight Bowl. 2016 was the second-straight year Indiana finished the regular season with a .500 record.
Wilson came to Indiana after serving as Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator from 2006-10. He will be paid his $542,000 base salary for 2017 as part of his resignation.
Allen joined the team before the 2016 season after serving as South Florida’s defensive coordinator in 2015. Before he was with USF for a season, Allen was the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Ole Miss.
