Yahoo Sports Report: Washington player bothered by clock mismanagement, not Haskins' selfie
Washington rookie Dwayne Haskins has been ridiculed by some for missing the final snap of the game on Sunday — a kneeldown — because he was behind the bench taking a selfie with a fan to celebrate his first win as an NFL starting quarterback.
But it doesn’t look like his teammates are among them.
Report: End-of-game management was a problem
John Keim, ESPN’s Washington reporter, tweeted on Monday afternoon that at least one of Haskins’ teammates wasn’t upset about the quarterback’s celebration miscue.
“Far more upset with the end-of-game clock management,” Keim tweeted in regards to comments from one player. “If going to kick on 1st down, why call a [timeout] with :20 left? Left the Lions with 2 [timeouts] and 16 seconds. One fluky play gets you in field goal range. So there you go.”
In case you weren’t watching on Sunday (and we can’t say we blame you), Haskins completed a 17-yard pass to Terry McLaurin on third-and-5 with 27 seconds to play.
But instead of doing something to take more time off the clock, Washington took its final timeout after the play and then brought kicker Dustin Hopkins out for the 39-yard field goal. Hopkins made the kick that ultimately won the game, putting Washington up 19-16.
Hopkins’ ensuing kickoff was a touchback, meaning the Lions and quarterback Jeff Driskel had 16 seconds and two timeouts to get into field goal range.
Driskel was sacked on first down and intercepted the next play, so in hindsight it was a no harm, no foul situation.
But in the moment? That clock management was certainly risky.
