Texas Rangers acquire pitcher from Detroit Tigers on day of MLB Trade deadline

The Texas Rangers have acquired left-hand relief pitcher Andrew Chafin from the Detroit Tigers to help bolster the bullpen according to ESPN reporter Jeff Passan.

The Rangers exchanged left-hand pitcher Chase Lee and right-hand pitcher Joseph Montalvo, both of whom are currently in the minor leagues.

Lee, 25, has gone 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 11 appearances with the Arizona Complex League after being selected by the Rangers with the second pick in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft after ending his collegiate career for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

. Montalvo, 22, has gone 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in 13 starts for High-A Hickory. He was the 584th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of Central Pointe Christian Academy, a high school in Kissimmee, Fla.

The 34-year-old Chafin is 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA with one save attempt this season.

He was raised in Wakeman, Ohio, and played his high school baseball there before joining Kent State to play college baseball; and was drafted with the No. 43 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks the same team he made his MLB debut for in 2014.

Chafin spent the first six years of his MLB career with the Diamondbacks before being traded around the league playing for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Milwaukee Brewers and his last stop before the Rangers, the Tigers.
