Report: Spurs sign Dejounte Murray to four-year, $64 million extension
The San Antonio Spurs know they need a stud defender to take care of all the big-time scorers in the Western Conference. The team reportedly agreed to a four-year, $64 million extension with guard Dejounte Murray on Monday, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Murray, 23, averaged 8.1 points and 5.7 rebounds with the Spurs during the 2017-18 season. He spent last season recovering from an ACL injury.
Prior to the injury, Murray had emerged as a lock-down defender. During the 2017-18 season, Murray ranked fifth in steal percentage and defensive rating. That performance got Murray named to the All-Defensive 2nd team that season.
With the deal, the Spurs must feel confident about Murray’s health. In August, Murray tweeted he had been cleared to return to action following his ACL injury. He’s played in five preseason games, averaging 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
The Spurs are also betting on Murray taking a step forward after he showed plenty of promise in 2017-18.
