Report: Rockets to interview ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy for head coaching vacancy

The Houston Rockets are considering reuniting with Jeff Van Gundy. The team will reportedly interview Van Gundy for its head coaching vacancy Wednesday, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Van Gundy, 58, should be familiar with the organization. He coached the Rockets for four seasons. Over that period, he led the team to a .555 winning percentage. He made the playoffs three out of four years, but went just 7-12 in the postseason. The Rockets fired Van Gundy following the 2006-07 season. He joined ESPN shortly after being fired by the Rockets.

The Rockets are seeking a new head coach after Mike D’Antoni told the team he wasn’t going to return. D’Antoni led the team to a 217-101 record over four seasons.

Rockets also looking at Tyronn Lue and John Lucas

Van Gundy will have plenty of competition for the job. The Rockets reportedly already interviewed former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue on Monday, according to Stein. Lue, 43, has also drawn interest from the Los Angeles Clippers and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Rockets also plan to interview assistant coach John Lucas. The 66-year-old has six years of experience as a head coach and has been part of the NBA for more than four decades. He joined the Rockets for the 2016-17 season. Lucas has a career .401 winning percentage as a head coach.
