Report: Police got search warrant after suspecting Deondre Francois of selling pot
Tallahassee police reportedly believed Deondre Francois was selling marijuana when they searched his apartment last week.
The Orlando Sentinel obtained the search warrant police used when they looked through Francois’ residence on Thursday. The warrant came after a late February tip led them to go through his garbage four times in the interim.
The evidence obtained through the garbage searches was enough to get the warrant. The tip allegedly came from a person who said a paper grocery bag full of marijuana was in Francois’ kitchen. Francois received a citation for marijuana possession after the search and has entered a diversion program.
The citation likely stems from the fact the police did not find a grocery bag full of weed when they went through his residence.
The location of Francois’ home prevented TPD from conducting constant surveillance, according to the warrant. But TPD believed the discarded garbage showed evidence of ongoing criminal activity at Francois’s apartment.
During the inspections, twice at Francois’ apartment and twice with garbage taken to police headquarters, police found documents with Francois’ name, plastic bags with cannabis residue and the emptied contents of blunt-type cigars.
When TPD conducted its search of Francois’ apartment on Thursday, during which his girlfriend Diamond Lindsey was present, police smelled marijuana coming from inside the apartment and found the 17 grams of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia less than two feet from Francois’ bed.
His girlfriend said she was the one smoking and Francois had not smoked since December 2017, according to police records.
Florida State said last week that it was aware of Francois’ citation and the matter would be handled internally.
“He’s still with our football team,” FSU coach Willie Taggart said after the team’s spring game on Saturday. “Deondre and I, we talked … He understands his responsibility as a student-athlete here and he understands my expectations and what I’m looking for especially when it comes to our quarterback. He’s got to be smart, who he’s around, what he’s around and make good decisions.”
Francois is currently rehabbing from the knee injury he suffered in Florida State’s Week 1 game against Alabama in 2017. He didn’t participate in the spring game because of that rehab.
