Reports: Patriots WR Julian Edelman to miss time after knee surgery

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman had knee surgery on Thursday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, delivering another blow to an already difficult season in Foxborough.

According to the report, it was a “precautionary standard knee procedure,” but no other details on the surgery were reported. The knee injury has reportedly lingered all season. He is expected to miss “some period of time,” per the report, including Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Edelman’s absence from practice was notable to beat reporters, with The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reporting that the injury isn’t expected to force Edelman to miss the rest of the season.

Edelman is New England’s leading receiver with 21 catches for 315 yards. He does not have a touchdown as the Patriots have scored just three TDs through the air in six games.

More bad news for Patriots

The 2-4 Patriots are coming off their worst home loss under Bill Belichick, a 33-6 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. They are two games under .500 for the first time since a 1-3 start to the 2001 season that saw Tom Brady replace an injured Drew Bledsoe in Week 2.

After a 2-1 start, the Patriots have lost three straight with a struggling offense averaging 9.3 points per game during the losing streak. New England’s second-leading receiver behind Edelman is Damiere Byrd with 18 catches for 233 yards.

New England could also be without third-leading receiver N’Keal Harry against Buffalo. Harry left Sunday’s loss to the 49ers with a concussion and has missed practice this week.
