Remember when Edmonton Oilers fans were howling when the Columbus Blue Jackets sprung for Pierre-Luc Dubois on the draft floor in 2016 and Jesse Puljujarvi dropped into their laps at No. 4?

Yeah.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Puljujarvi has submitted a trade request from Edmonton, citing the need for a “fresh new start.”

In fact, Puljujarvi’s agent, Markus Lehto, has gone as far to say that his client will not play another game in Alberta’s capital, according to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector.

"If he [Puljujarvi’] doesn’t get traded," Lehto confirmed, "he will play in Europe next year. He will not play in Edmonton."

The new Oilers brass led by Ken Holland will try to accommodate his demand, says Dreger, but he does note that Edmonton will be patient to ensure it receives equitable return for the once prized prospect.

A restricted free agent, Puljujarvi has failed to put himself in the same position as the wave of young stars looking to cash in this summer. His development stunted in three years split between Edmonton and Bakersfield, Puljujarvi has been limited to 17 goals and 37 points in 137 NHL games since his debut in 2016.

TSN’s Ryan Rishaug suggests that Holland could pull the trigger on the deal if it nets the Oilers a third-line winger, which would represent a significant organizational failure given the spot Puljujarvi was originally drafted.

It should be noted that Puljujarvi’s third season was shut down in early March to undergo double hip surgery.

According to Lehto and Spector, there is already interest from at least one KHL team in his services.
