Report: Louisville win has 'prominent' Texas boosters lusting after Tom Herman again

Those fickle Texas boosters are apparently at it again.

According to a report by ESPN, some “prominent” Texas boosters are so impressed with Houston’s win over Louisville on Thursday night that they are again backing Houston coach Tom Herman to be the Longhorns’ next coach and pressuring the school to make a coaching change at the end of the season.

Why is there a sudden surge of Herman interest? Well apparently these boosters thought Herman was less desirable after Houston lost to SMU for its second loss of the season. But now that the Cougars are 9-2 and just beat the No. 5 team in the country, things are different. The coaching drama is just bigger in Texas, apparently.

From ESPN:

“Herman was dead in the water (with Texas) when he lost to SMU (Oct. 22),” a source said. “And now he’s hotter than ever.”

Texas is currently 5-5 and one win away from a second bowl game in Strong’s three-year tenure. The Longhorns lost the 2014 Texas Bowl to Arkansas after finishing the regular season 6-6. A two-game win streak to end 2016 would be Strong’s first winning season with the team.

While we understand how fickle influential football fans can be, suddenly reversing course on Herman after one big win seems incredibly shortsighted. How can a coach feel comfortable at a school like Texas if boosters are going to be so easily swayed by the results of two football games in a 12-game season?

The pressure from boosters regarding Herman is also reminiscent of the way Texas boosters desired after Alabama coach Nick Saban before the team hired Strong in January 2014. A Texas regent reached out to Saban’s agent in January 2013, months before Mack Brown had made the decision to retire at the end of the season. Saban revealed in July 2015 that his agent Jimmy Sexton contacted him over a dozen times about coaching Texas and each time Saban said no.
