Report: Lane Kiffin hires Charlie Weis Jr., 24, as FAU's new OC
Lane Kiffin’s new offensive coordinator won’t be much older than the players he’s coaching.
According to Owl Access, Kiffin has tabbed 24-year-old Charlie Weis Jr. as the team’s new offensive coordinator. Yes, Weis Jr. is the son of former Kansas and Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis.
Charlie Weis Jr. replaces Kendal Briles, who spent a season as FAU’s offensive coordinator. Briles was, controversially, hired as Houston’s offensive coordinator earlier in January.
Per the report, Weis could be the youngest coordinator in FBS history. And we’re inclined to agree with that. We don’t know of anyone else less than three years removed from his senior year of college who has gotten a job as an offensive coordinator at an FBS school.
Kiffin sure loves to make hires that aren’t conventional and it’s worth noting that Kiffin made history himself as the youngest head coach in the NFL’s modern era when the Raiders hired him at 31.
Weis Jr. was the team’s tight ends coach in 2016 and was an offensive assistant for the Atlanta Falcons in 2017.
Weis’ father last coached in college football in 2014. That was his final season as Kansas’ head coach. Weis spent three seasons at Kansas after a year as Florida’s offensive coordinator and a year as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The stint with the Chiefs came after five seasons with Notre Dame, where Weis compiled a 35-27 record as head coach. He was 6-22 at Kansas and is now most infamously known for the buyout checks he’s collected from both schools.
